Chris Hare lecture
Davenports are hosting a London Society of Magicians (LSM) lecture on Tuesday 26th June 7pm.
Chris Hare is the creator of Birthday Detector and the author of Sensational Memory and has recently released two new effects “Where in the World?” and “Where Next?”
Chris Hare presents an entertaining and informative lecture of approximately 2 hours (plus) in duration. Although there are one or two items for sale, the lecture is not a dealer-dem.
The powerful mental effects in the lecture can be performed using everyday items. These powerful and entertaining effects require “know-how” as opposed to any sort of physical manipulation skill.
Chris Hare has been a professional entertainer for over twenty years, during which time he performed his Hypnotic Show for a year in The Canary Islands, six nights a week. He also performed on a cruise ship where he memorised the birthdays of over 300 passengers and was able to recall all of them instantly.
During the lecture he also teaches people how to increase their memory more than perhaps they could ever possibly imagine.
Tickets available on the door. £10 each for non LSM members.

Magic classes for Children, dates now set !!!!
We have now set the dates for our next two children’s classes to be the 19th May and 2nd June 2012. From 10.30am to 1.30pm.
Our new magic class, specially designed for children from 8 to 13 years, is a perfect introduction to magic.
Although not as intensive as our adult course, we still teach the important basics of magic, some simple tricks, as well as a few that will take some more practice. We also cover some of the fundamental sleight of hand with cards, coins and sponge balls.
The course is interactive and fun, and does not asume any prior knowledge.
All the equipment that is needed is included in the cost of the course.
The course is taught by Bob Pamplin, an experienced professional magician and children’s enternainer.
This is a one day course, though we are planning subsequent days during the summer holidays.
The course starts at 10.30pm, and finishes at 1.30pm, and takes place in our studio, adjacent to our shop in Charing Cross, London.
Booking can be made through our web site here:
Places are limited, so early booking is recomended.
Beginner Magic Course dates set …
We have set the dates for the next three day beginner course to be the 19th, 26th May and 2nd June 2012, from 1.30pm to 5pm (please note the slightly later starting time than usual).
If you wish, you can book the course of three lessons on-line, and your space would be reserved on the next course. The days on the course are transferable, so if you wished you could do the first day on one course, and the last two on the next for example. However each day builds on what’s taught on the previous one, so we do recommend doing the days in order.
The course is aimed at those looking to gain a good working knowledge of the fundamentals of magic. We will be teaching the technical, presentation and misdirection techniques that are important for all types and levels of magic.
The course will include card, coin, sponge balls plus the classics of cups & balls, as well as other aspects of sleight-of-hand. The important aspects of presentation and misdirection will also be introduced and developed throughout the course.
Bookings can be made through our web site here or by phoning us on 020 7836 0408
New web server …
We are in the process of moving our site to a super-fast web server. Until all the technical work is finished, you may be able to see the site, but not carry out orders. All should be working by tomorrow.

Davenports Haunting
Sounds like the name of a magic trick, but todays blog is actually a legend.
Like every great old theatrical place in London, some people say that Davenports is haunted. In my time, nothing strange ever happened, and I never saw anything. But before me, demonstrators say they saw someone, a ghostly apparition, walking through the shop, but when they went to see who was going to the back of the shop where customers aren’t allowed, there was no-one there. They also complained of locking up at night, and re-opening the next morning and an item like some scissors had gone missing, only to show up again the next day.
These stories led to Davenports being published in a ghost hunting tour book of London, and every now and then these tourists would come in to find the ghost! I remember one particular chap, he came over from Japan to do the tour. He had this awesome thermometer gun that measured drops in temperature where he pointed it. I used to have great fun playing with these tourists, it’s amazing what an affect a small animation effect can have on someone looking for a ghost! Our Japanese friend happened to pop by when the Spider Pen was the big thing, so for him I went the whole hog and floated a banknote. He got very excited saying the temperature was dropping too, but then he got a bit too spooked and ran off! Honestly, if there’s one place in the world where you might expect a ghostly presence to be faked, it would be in a magic shop, right?!
